What is underground drainage?

Underground drainage is a system that transports excess rainwater away from your home to stop the ground from becoming too wet. It is also a highly efficient way to transport wastewater to a sewage treatment facility from your home. Not only is underground drainage a better choice for sanitary reasons, but it removes the need for an unsightly drainage system above ground level.

What are the types of drainage?

There are many types of drainage systems that you can install in your home to ensure excess and wastewater are safely transported. This helps avoid any leaks or weather-related damage. Underground drainage and surface drainage can remove rainwater at ground level, whilst guttering removes water from the roof.

What size drainage pipe should I use for underground drainage?

110 mm is the most common size for domestic underground drainage, carrying foul and surface water. For larger commercial applications or higher flow rates, 160 mm and above may be used. Always match fittings to your pipe diameter.

How do underground drainage couplers and joints work?

Couplers and joints connect lengths of pipe and fittings using sockets or push-fit seals. Lubricate rubber seals, chamfer pipe ends and push the pipes fully home to create a watertight joint. Proper sealing prevents leaks and soil ingress.

Why are rodding points and inspection chambers important?

Rodding points and inspection chambers give access to the drain below ground so you can clear blockages or inspect the system without digging up the pipework. They’re essential at junctions, direction changes and long runs.

How do I choose the right underground drainage fittings for my layout?

Start with a plan showing pipe runs and direction changes. Use bends for changes in flow direction, junctions to branch off lines, and couplers to join sections. Always match pipe diameter and profile to the fittings to ensure secure, compliant joins.
