Solar Lanterns

In a range of simple and unobtrusive designs, our solar lanterns come from leading brands like Luceco. Using the energy of the sun alone, these cable-free solutions offer various modes that determine how they function, altering the sensitivity to light and motion that’s required to activate the bulb.

Solar Fence Lights

Perfect for brightening up certain corners of the garden, solar fence lights are an excellent option as you won’t have any wires to run around. With simple fixings, you can add our solar powered garden lights wherever they work best, including to your fences.

Solar Security Lights

Outdoor lighting is also useful when it comes to security and surveillance, which is why you’ll find a great selection of motion detecting PIR security lights here at Toolstation, with ranges of up to six metres.

How solar lighting works

Solar panel (PV) captures daylight, converts to DC electricity.
Energy stores in battery (often lithium, NiMH or SLA).
Light sensor or dusk/dawn timer triggers LED units at night.
Motion/PIR sensor raises output when movement is detected in security units.
Some units offer modes (constant, dim, motion, override).

Choosing the right solar light for the job

Consider the following elements when selecting a solar powered light:

Light type & purpose – security, flood, path, ambient, work light
Brightness & lumen rating – match to coverage needs
Battery & runtime – larger battery = longer runtime
Panel size & efficiency – more effective under low light
Mounting & orientation – fixed, remote panel, tilt, swivel
Sensor & control features – motion, adjustable detection, timer modes
Weather resistance & IP rating – for exposed locations
Material & build quality – impact resistance, corrosion protection

Why choose solar lights?

No mains wiring or trenching
Reduced energy bills (zero to run after install)
Quick, low-cost install
Versatile & portable applications (garden, driveway, workshop)
Adds security with motion detection
Eco-friendly / zero carbon operation
Great for locations where mains power is hard to run
