Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

What size door bolt do I need?

The right size depends on the weight of the door and the level of security required. Small bolts for doors (typically 50mm to 75mm) are perfect for lightweight internal partitions, bathroom privacy, or utility cupboards. For heavy exterior doors, wooden gates, or high-security areas, you should opt for a heavy-duty door bolt measuring 100mm to 150mm to ensure a deep, robust engagement into the keep.

Where should I install internal door bolts?

Internal door bolts are typically installed on bathroom, bedroom, or home office doors to provide quick, reliable privacy. For the best stability and ease of use, they are usually mounted on the opening side of the door, either horizontally just above the main handle or vertically at the top of the door.

What is the difference between a straight and a necked door bolt?

A straight door bolt is designed for doors that sit completely flush with the surrounding frame. A necked (or cranked) door bolt features a distinct stepped shaft, making it ideal for doors that are recessed or sit slightly lower than the frame, allowing the bolt to bridge the offset gap securely into the keep.

Can a door lock bolt be used on an exterior door?

Yes, a heavy-duty door lock bolt provides excellent supplementary security for exterior doors, gates, and outbuildings by adding an extra physical barrier against forced entry. However, to meet home insurance standards, they must be used in conjunction with a primary secure locking mechanism, such as a multi-point lock or a 5-lever mortice deadlock.
